After so many journalistics screw ups, is it possible that this reporter is finally starting to use his brain rather than doing his usual cut 'n paste hack job?
I'll be watching this case with interest as it's closely related to the issues I've had.

I think this is the first time that a case from E-2 visa holders has happened. Never has there been any feedback from the foreign teachers. Or if there were, it was manipulated. Also, we can see how the reporters have been handling it as well. It is obvious that they screwed things up and didn't have the sense to mae sure everything was ok or not. I wonder how much of this goes on in the Korean language media.
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting time for the foreigner community in Korea. It looks like NETs have been pushed too far by irrational goverment policies put in place after unethical journalism. I'd like to think that we'll be seeing more of these kind of cases and the foreign community, as a whole, standing up for itself.
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is that the stuff published in the Korean language media is much worse than what's published in the English language media.
I agree with you. But another problem is not with the government policy. It is the mentality of the Korean society. They are the ones who believe all the rumors about the foreigners.A lot of the media does expand on the information, but the people don't try to find out what the real truth is. Just like the beef issue last year. How many people believed the reports last year? How many still do now? And they heard it from the news and took it as face value.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there are some Koreans who believe everything they read in the media (just like there are some NETs who deserve the reputation we've all been given) but I'm not comfortable painting Korean society as a whole with that particular brush.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't here for the crazy cow riots so really can't comment on them but the Koreans I've spoken to about the NET media beat-ups know that the reports are trash and they acknowledge that KIS & POE policies regarding HIV/AIDS checks are discriminatory. But from what I've seen, they feel pretty helpless about doing something about it. And if you're the majority and not affected by the policies or reports, you've got much less incentive to do something about it.
But I do think you're right about a lack of critical and independent thought. When you look at the education system, I guess it's not so surprising.
